The Heart of the River coalition was formed in April, 2013 in response to an announced plan by the Anderson (Indiana) Corporation for Economic Development to build a dam and reservoir on the White River which is central Indiana’s principal geographic feature.  It’s a diverse group comprised of local residents whose properties would be affected, environmentalists, wildlife enthusiasts, hikers, and recreational paddlers, among others.  Its participants include individuals as well as designated representatives of local, regional and statewide interest groups which are governed by their boards of directors, and will likely present their own statements from time to time.  The day-to-day content of this blog does not purport to represent the views of all coalition participants due to the wide range of interests present.

This blog will seek to educate and publicize alternative perspectives as well as the notable events along the way.  For more complete and current reports and events, be sure to visit the coalition’s website:  http://www.moundslakereservoir.org

Also, the blog will provide general content related to conservation practice and philosophy, and may address other specific threats to our lands and waters which emerge from time to time..

Heart of the River Coalition (est. 2013)

Vision statement–

We envision the White River as a free-flowing stream, allowed to perform its many natural functions with minimal human encroachment.  We envision the river as an ecological, aesthetic, inspirational, community/cultural, and recreational resource which deserves protection.  We envision the preservation of the home places and family heritage which many local residents have built over several generations and desire to preserve.  We also envision the preservation of all sites, earthworks and artifacts of the earliest inhabitants for whom the White River meant both survival and spiritual sustenance.

Mission Statement–

The Heart of the River coalition is a grassroots organization formed in 2013 in response to the threat of a planned dam on White River in Anderson, Indiana and a reservoir that would affect Anderson, Chesterfield, Daleville, and Madison and Delaware Counties.  It will work to present our vision to the community and to public officials. It will offer an alternative nature- and community-oriented vision to the dam and reservoir proposal.  It will work to critique the rebuttable rationale offered by the promoters of a dam and to monitor, consult, and intervene, as appropriate, in proposed actions by public agencies.

This blog was created, and is maintained, by one of the organizers of the coalition.  The day-to-day content decisions are his alone and do not necessarily always reflect the views of all members of the coalition.
